Can The Fig Tree?
James 3:12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
To be contextually correct, we see James is using this in reference to the tongue and our speech, yet I’d like to take the principle and apply it to our Christian lives in another area.
You (if you are a Christian) have been engrafted into the True Vine by God at the moment of your new birth. If you remain in the vine you will only be able to bear the fruit of the True Vine. If you remain in the world, you will bear the fruit of the world.
Some of you, condemned by your own heart, will say, “Are you saying that if I am not bearing the fruit of Christ I’m not abiding in Him?”
Do not worry so much about what I say, but rather what the scripture says. Can a fig tree produce olives? Can Christ produce something other than Christ? Can flesh produce something other than carnality?
I heard that the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time to plant a tree is today. Do not condemn yourself over time lost, but rather, seize the day’s opportunity to sit with Christ and learn of Him. Abide in him and watch the fruit you long for begin to be produced effortlessly in your life. As the branch stays on the vine the sap of the vine will flood the branch, bringing its life with it.
